Cousin Dee, born Charles Demetrius Abner, is a multifaceted rap artist, DJ, and producer, born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama. His roots run deep in the city, where he grew up inspired by the relentless work ethic of his father, an insurance salesman, and the soulful musicality of his mother, a revered musical director and piano player for her church.
Dee's journey into the world of rap began in the seventh grade, where his lyrical prowess started to take shape. He found inspiration in the pioneering work of Luther Campbell (Uncle Luke), whose bold and unapologetic style influenced Dee's approach to music. His senior year brought significant change as he embraced fatherhood and joined the army to provide for his son. His military service took him across the globe, from the streets of Montgomery to as far as Korea, exposing him to a wealth of cultural and musical influences.
Upon returning to Montgomery, Dee formed the rap group Orgy and the Freaksom Boyz, making waves with their debut album, Freaky Life, released in 2000. This album not only cemented their place in the local music scene but also inspired numerous local artists. Dee generously shared his knowledge, guiding upcoming talents in the intricacies of producing and self-distributing an album.
By 2002, Dee had reinvented himself as DJ Cousin Dee, securing a long-standing residency at the historic Cotton Club of Montgomery. During his time as a DJ, he produced and self-distributed several hit songs, further solidifying his influence in the music scene. His dynamic performances and innovative sounds have made him a staple in the Montgomery music scene, where he continues to influence and elevate the local artistry.
In 2024, Cousin Dee reached a new milestone with a distribution deal following the success of his hit song "Knock It Out The Box." This achievement marks a significant chapter in his career, showcasing his evolution as an artist and his enduring impact on the industry.
