Ice Cube Says That Warner Bros. Turned Down Two New ‘Friday’ Four Scripts

While on a new episode of Drink Champs, Ice Cube revealed why Warner Bros. rejected two of his scripts for a fourth Friday.

Fans might have to wait another 20 years for Ice Cube to drop another Friday. During a recent episode of Drink Champs, which was filmed at the inaugural Rock the Bells festival in Queens, Cube explained the Friday hold-up.

“I’m tryna get it out of Warner Bros. They don’t believe in the culture, man,” Cube told podcast hosts N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN.

The 53-year-old rapper-actor also shared that Warner Bros. has distribution rights to the Friday series, which ended with Friday After Next in 2002. In 2007, Friday: The Animated Series premiered on MTV2 for one season.

“Once I take the character’s names, it becomes a property of Friday,” Cube added when discussing the possibility of changing the film’s name. “It’s useless. They just need to come off that shit!”

Cube also revealed that the production company rejected two of his scripts for a fourth Friday, including one with Craig (Cube) and Day-Day (Mike Epps) going to jail for selling marijuana.

“The shit is funny,”Cube said. “After they rejected it, they had all these movies about going to jail. So I was like, ‘Man, see, y’all fucked me up.’ The other script was about the youngsters in the hood having beef with the OGs, and Craig has to come back and squash that. Smokey’s [Chris Tucker’s] son is the new Deebo [Tommy Lister Jr.], and he’s wilding.”

Cube also mentioned the passing of key Friday players, John Witherspoon, who played Craig’s father, Willie Jones, Lister, who played Deebo, and A.J. Johnson, who played Ezal. When asked about the potential of Tucker starring in another Friday, Cube admitted that the actor-comedian “is slippy,” but that the two are “cool.”

Sequels to fellow Cube films like 1998’s The Players Club and 2002’s All About the Benjamins are also on hold due to Warner Bros. “Once again, another Warner Bros’ fuck up,” Cube concluded.
